With all the furor unfolding over the recent US “Peace Plan” for Ukraine, It reminded me of this cartoon for The Economist that I penned February 28, 2025.

A week earlier on February 21, 2025, Trump had talked directly with Russian President Putin about the future of Ukraine, bypassing his European allies.

When Trump met with Ukranian President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office the following week, Trump displayed sympathy for Putin’s perspective on the conflict. He then then publicly berated and embarassed Zelenskyy in front of the world.

When the Russians first invaded in 2022, it was widely assumed that they would swamp the Ukrainian forces. But early success on the battlefield soon changed the balance of power.

The US has long been split as to how best handle the war in Ukraine.

Unfortunately, Trump’s erratic behavior toward its valiant ally has reinforced the notion that the US is an unpredictable and unreliable global partner.
